Academics are asked to give back to society above and beyond research and teaching. This is legitimate in a time when humanity is facing life threatening challenges like climate change. This, however, obliges us to balance competing demands, as we all know that both research and teaching need devotion and time. Adding a new responsibility does not come free of charge. In this website we post experiences and ideas on how to craft our community involvement in a way that is compatible with our primary mission, i.e. freedom of thought and talk as a critical voice for the advancement and emancipation of society. We believe that the metaphor of „slow academy“ should be at the hearth of our external involvement. This can give us the traction to contribute to the solution of humanity’s main problems, climate change, poverty, discrimination, innovation. Slow academy means societal speed: time for pausing and reflecting on where we are really heading to.
Great attempt. This reminds me of a work by Uta Frith: Fast lane to slow science: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1364661319302426
We would win so much as a socienty if just we could slow down. This is also true for science, hope I find time to dive into the slow academy….
